
Making Bathroom Heaters Warm, Not Blinding
Most bathroom heaters use short-wave infrared lamps to get you warm the second you flip the switch. Now, getting the heat is the easy part. The real trick is making sure the light doesn’t blind you—which is a huge deal when you’re dealing with babies and their sensitive eyes.
The light problem
Standard halogen tubes blast out a wide range of light. To keep things safe, we have to tweak how that light is distributed. We use specific quartz glass and internal coatings to filter out those harsh blue peaks and the glare that makes you squint. The heat still hits your skin and feels great, but the blinding light is gone. We keep the energy focused in a specific range (0.76 to 1.5 $\mu$m). This means the warmth actually sinks into your body, but your eyes don’t have to deal with a high-intensity light show.
The balancing act
We use reflectors to push the heat straight down. If the angle is off by even a couple of degrees, you end up with annoying hot spots and wasted energy. To keep the glow “soft,” we add diffusion layers or special coatings right on the lamp face. But here’s the thing: you can’t get something for nothing. When we block those visible wavelengths to protect your eyes, the light gets a bit dimmer. You lose some brightness, but the actual heating power stays exactly the same.
A few tips for setup
If you’re installing these, make sure your voltage is stable. If the voltage spikes, the filament gets too hot, which can mess with the light spectrum and throw those eye-protection benefits out the window. And if you’re setting this up for a baby, go with lower wattage lamps and wider beam angles. It stops the heat from concentrating in one spot on their skin, making it much gentler.
