Most traditional spray booths are basically giant wind tunnels. They blast massive amounts of air to keep the temperature up, but there’s a catch: all that airflow acts like a vacuum. It sucks up every bit of dust, lint, and gunk floating around and slams it right into your wet paint. In aerospace, that’s a nightmare. One tiny speck of dust isn’t just an eyesore—it can actually cause a structural flaw or make the whole finish fail. We handle this by ditching the forced-air heating and using Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) instead. Here’s the thing about infrared: it doesn’t bother heating the air. Instead, it sends out radiation that goes straight through the coating to heat the part itself. Since you aren’t blasting hot air everywhere, you stop moving the dust. We call it “static curing.” You stop the air, and the contaminants just stay put. To make this work, we use high-density quartz tubes. These things hit curing temperature in seconds. It creates this great “skin-over” effect where the top layer of paint hardens almost instantly. This locks out any stray particles before they even have a chance to settle into the film. Now, you do have to be smart about where you put the lamps. SWIR only works if it has a clear line of sight. If your part has deep pockets or a weird shape, you’ll end up with cold spots. You’ve got to map out the lamp array carefully so the heat hits every single surface at the right angle. The result? You get rid of that annoying “orange peel” look and those tiny bumps caused by dust. Plus, it’s just faster. You aren’t sitting around waiting for a massive room to warm up. You just flip the switch and start curing. Your equipment takes up less space, and you stop throwing away ruined parts.
