
Getting Your Sidel Preform Heating Right
If you’re running PET preforms, you know that getting the thermal profile just right is everything. It all comes down to how that infrared energy hits the plastic. We build our softening lamps to fit basically every Sidel machine out there. Whether you’re still rocking the old SBOs or you’ve moved up to the Matrix series, our lamps just work. We aren’t talking about “mostly fitting”—we mean they slide right in, matching the exact size and electrical draw of the original parts. No fuss, no modifications. It’s all in the millimeters Here is the thing: if a lamp is off by even two millimeters, it won’t sit right in the oven rack. That’s a recipe for disaster. If the fit is tight or crooked, you put mechanical stress on the quartz glass, and that’s when things break. We make sure our tubes hit those Sidel specs exactly. Plus, we focus on high watt-density so the heat penetrates the PET or PC walls fast. Just make sure your voltage matches—whether you’re on 230V or a higher industrial setup. If you get that wrong, your filaments will burn out way sooner than they should. The grit and the glass We use high-purity quartz because blow molding ovens are brutal. The constant heating and cooling—the thermal cycling—can destroy cheap glass. Our focus is on short-wave infrared. Why? Because you want the heat hitting the center of the preform, not wasting energy by heating up the oven walls. We also beefed up the connectors to handle the constant vibration and heat. Loose contacts lead to arcing, and arcing kills your lamps. Simple as that. A quick word on power You might be tempted to go with higher wattage lamps to speed up your cycle and push out more bottles. It works, but there’s a trade-off. More power means more heat, which puts a lot more pressure on your cooling blowers. If you decide to bump up the heat density beyond your original setup, keep a close eye on the ambient temperature in the oven. You don’t want to warp your reflectors.
